Blogs! | 08 Feb 2010

I recently discovered a few art and design blogs I'm really enjoying, However, I'd rather read them than write about them, so here they are in their own words:

Escape Into Life [www.escapeintolife.com]

Escape into Life, Arts and Culture webzine, is a publication based on the concept of citizen journalism. The goal is to create a journal of poetry, essays, and art from writers who are already publishing on the Web and who would like to gain more exposure to their blogs. The artists we feature are the very best we can find, and the writers have a background in writing and a passion for the arts.

An Aesthete's Lament [aestheteslament.blogspot.com]

"An Aesthete's Lament" is a style blog that spans the globe—in subject matter as well as readers. Residents of more than 80 countries can't be wrong, checking in daily since January 2008 to lose themselves in posts about decoration, fashion, art, architecture, entertaining, design history, personalities, and more. The philosophy of this blog is to inspire you to live with more personal panache: whoever you are, whatever your income, and wherever you live, whether it's Kansas City or Kawasaki, Japan. Living well isn't hard. Nor does it have to cost a bundle. Trust me. It's not your wallet; it's your mindset.

Oculoid [oculoid.com]

Oculoid is my personal online space to share and discuss information about a subject I love very much. What is that subject? Why, art of course! Art is all around us, and we are exposed to it every day. Art is found in everything from the movies we watch, video games we play, books and magazines we read, posters and billboards we see, to just about anything you can buy in a store. If you stop and think about it, art went into almost everything of what you see around you right this second! My intent with Oculoid is to provide daily inspiration to the vast network of designers and artists that surf the net. Check in with Oculoid every day for the best the art world has to offer.

Happy reading!

Getting back in... | 06 Jan 2010

I haven't painted in a long time, but I painted today. Acrylic and marker on 16x20" canvas:

I called it "Sensitive". Lots of silly reasons.

Art, coming soon | 28 Oct 2009

As I lay in bed last night, I *almost* had the urge to go downstairs and paint. It would have felt good to have a brush in my hands and I even knew what to paint, but I couldn't decide on the surface--and bed was warm--and I didn't want to wake Joe--and anyway there are people sleeping in the basement now so I'd risk waking them too.

Looking forward to the new house, and a studio to make a mess in without bothering anyone! I feel as though I have a dozen projects just waiting for the right opportunity...!

WYSIWYG? | 14 Oct 2008

Played around with the website of a local business I really like, today--that is to say, I like the business. The site is atrocious. I figured, I could use the practice, so I'll do a redesign just for fun/as a portfolio piece, and maybe I'll mention it the next time I'm there, or maybe not.

The first thing I did was glance through the existing code. It hurt my eyes and my head, even where I tried to align it all nice to make some sense out of it... Really, wtf?

I imagine someone sitting in the WYSIWYG side of Dreamweaver, just clicking randomly until the text looks the way they want.

Work in progress | 11 Feb 2008

I have a frustrating habit of starting personal projects and then forgetting about them, especially if I get stuck or they start taking up too much of my time, or if the deadline for a contest entry sneaks past me...

So, I have half a dozen works in progress that I really need some input on: suggestions, critique, or just encouragement to get back to work.

A freehand typographic design

A mixed media collage

A stylized fantasy portrait

A surralist nude

A t-shirt modification

Any serious input will be greatly appreciated!
